Two new oral GLP-1 treatments are expected to arrive in the UK soon:
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are a class of prescription-only medicines used to support weight management. Currently available in injectable form, following assessment by a clinician.
Oral GLP-1 tablets are being developed and studied as once-daily tablet formulations for weight management. These medicines work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which can help regulate appetite and food intake.
Treatment suitability, availability and prescribing decisions are determined by a clinician following an appropriate consultation.
Tablet-based weight loss treatments
Contain a GLP-1 receptor agonist (the same active ingredient as Wegovy)
Taken once daily, rather than once weekly by injection
Clinically tested with results comparable to injectable options
An option for people who would prefer not to inject
Convenient for those with busy or unpredictable routines
No need for refrigerated storage or injection supplies

Like all medicines, oral GLP-1 tablets can cause side effects. Most are digestive and tend to be mild to moderate, often settling down as your body adjusts during the first few weeks of treatment.
