Norethisterone
Oral tablet
It’s important to take your treatment as directed. Make sure you read our summary below and read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your treatment.
Norethisterone tablets are one of a group of medicines called ‘Progestogens’. Progestogens are similar to the natural female hormone progesterone. Norethisterone tablets contains the progestogen called norethisterone as the active ingredient. The other ingredients are lactose, maize starch and magnesium stearate.
One tablet of Norethisterone should be taken three times a day, starting 3 days before your expected period.
Very rarely, Norethisterone tablets may cause a severe allergic reaction which can be life-threatening in some cases. You can get some or all of the following symptoms: wheezing, difficulty breathing ,feeling faint, swelling of the face or tongue, swelling of the hands and feet, intense itchy skin rash blood clot on the lungs, the brain or DVT (deep vein thrombosis) You may also experience side effects affecting: the reproductive system and breasts, the nervous system, the stomach and intestines, the nervous system, the metabolism, the heart and circulation, the skin and hair. See the Patient Information Leaflet included in your medication pack for more information.
Norethisterone is not suitable for all women and especially if you: are allergic to norethisterone, or other similar hormone medicines, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, have now or have ever had any vaginal bleeding (not a period) for which your doctor could not find a cause, have ever had a problem with blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - this includes other family members too have liver or heart problems, epilepsy, migraines, asthma. See the Patient Information Leaflet included in your medication pack for more information.
Norethisterone is the active ingredient and it’s a synthetic form of the progesterone hormone. Your monthly cycle is triggered by a natural fall in progesterone hormone levels. Taking Norethisterone maintains your progesterone levels and delays the shedding of your womb lining for as long as you take the medication. This delays your period in the short-term and your cycle will generally start a few days after you stop taking medication.
Norethisterone is suitable for occasional and short-term use. It shouldn’t be taken regularly and is not intended for period suppression (stopping your period altogether). When taken correctly, they are completely safe and don’t have any impact on fertility or sexual reproductive health.
You should not take them if you are a smoker or have a history of blood clots, as they can increase the risk of blood clots.
Some women may experience side effects which include:
Bloating
Breast tenderness
Loss of libido
Nausea
Headaches
Changes in mood
See the Patient Information Leaflet included in your medication pack for more information and how to manage any side effects, including stopping your course of Norethisterone.
Norethisterone taken for period delay doesn’t act as a contraception or alternative to oral contraceptives. To protect against pregnancy you’ll need to take specific contraceptive measures, such as the daily pill or other methods. If you’re already taking the combined pill you shouldn’t take Norethisterone. Take your combined pill back to back, missing the pill-free week, to skip a period.
If you’re trying to get pregnant, think you might be pregnant, are pregnant or have given birth in the last 6 weeks, Norethisterone is not a suitable medication for you.
If you’re breastfeeding, taking Norethisterone may cause a temporary reduction in your milk production.
